Digitalization where the data is generated – efficient mobile data acquisition for precise vehicle testing
BITS developed a tailor-made application for a leading company in the automotive industry that digitizes and automates the previously analogue vehicle testing process. The mobile app is operated directly on a tablet that is used in the vehicle during test drives – even under real conditions away from well-developed areas.
The aim was to make the entire process – from data collection to transfer to the existing system landscape – more efficient, secure and user-friendly. Particular attention was paid to the offline capability of the solution, as many test drives take place in regions without a stable internet connection.

BITS took on the holistic implementation: from the conception and full-stack development to IT architecture, quality assurance and infrastructure consulting. The close cooperation with the customer and regular feedback rounds with the subsequent users in the vehicle enabled a tailor-made, practical solution.
Challenge
The test environment – a tablet in the vehicle under changing conditions – placed particularly high demands on UI/UX, data security and technical robustness. At the same time, the application had to be intuitive to use, even while driving on a touchscreen with limited space.

Realization
The application developed is based on the latest web technologies and has been specially optimized for use on tablets in vehicles. The combination of various online and offline technologies has resulted in a powerful application that works reliably both offline and online. During the journey – often in regions without a stable internet connection – the app processes all data locally and automatically synchronizes it with the central system as soon as a connection is restored.
The development was carried out in close consultation with the future users. Real test conditions were simulated early on in the project: The application was tested directly on the tablets used in the vehicle with a connected data logger. This approach ensured that usability, data acquisition and system behavior were optimally adapted to practical use.
The project team attached particular importance to the modular structure of the application in order to be able to implement future extensions efficiently. At the same time, an agile development approach was pursued in which individual functionalities were implemented, tested and coordinated with the customer in short cycles. In this way, change requests could be flexibly taken into account and the tight project deadlines successfully met.
The app enables structured recording and processing of test data in real time – with direct feedback to the user in the vehicle. The local storage of the data ensures that no information is lost even if the connection is lost. The continuous integration of feedback from the practical tests with test drivers ensured that the application is not only technically impressive, but also works perfectly in daily use.
Conclusion
Thanks to the customized tablet app, the customer was able to massively optimize its test processes. The solution enabled end-to-end digital recording of test data – directly in the vehicle, even without an internet connection. Manual effort was significantly reduced, sources of error minimized and data quality increased.
With this solution, BITS demonstrates how technological expertise and practical thinking can work together to effectively solve complex requirements in the automotive industry. The developed tablet application delivers digital efficiency in mobile use – robust, intuitive and future-proof.
